Burrillville students take on bullying

November 1, 2011

ByJOSEPH FITZGERALD, The Woonsocket Call Newspaper

BURILLVILLE — For students at Burrillville Middle School, “being mean stinks.”
Hundreds of students in Grades 7-8 have been taking part in Bullying Prevention Month activities this month as part of a local school campaign to spread the word about bullying prevention.
Led by school counselor Pamela Connors, each of the students have taken the anti-bullying promise in which they pledge to wipe out bullying. “Bullying is cruel. Bullying hurts. Bullying will not be tolerated,” the pledge says in part.

“These activities have really united our school,” says Connors.
“The program helps people who have never been bullied or who are bystanders open their eyes to what some kids go through each day, and gives them courage to do something about it,” added Grade 7 student Jill Cash.

Important information regarding making up Irene school closings during February vacation

Dear Parents/Students:

As you are aware, schools were closed August 31, September 1 and 2 because of Tropical Storm Irene. The 2011-2012 School Calendar indicates that three days of school closings would be made up during the February vacation (Feb. 20-24).

At the September 13, 2011 School Committee meeting, I recommended and the School Committee approved making up the three days during the February school vacation. The make¬up days will be February 21, 22, 23. If you are already committed and/or have plans during February 21, 22, 23, your child will have an excused absence. He/she will still be responsible for school work and/or assignments. Please contact the principal and/or teacher for assignments or make-up work. Also, please notify the principal by the end of September if you have already made plans for the February vacation.

I made the decision because if we make up the three days in June, the school year would end June 15. If we have snow days to make up, students would be attending school the week of June 18-22 or beyond.

If the decision has caused an extreme extenuating circumstance for anyone, please contact the principal or myself and we would be happy to provide a reasonable solution.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Sincerely,
Dr. Frank Pallotta, Superintendent
Burrillville School Department
